Volunteering

“After leaving a rather demanding working life, I first focused on improving my physical condition and then, by joining a book club, my mental well-being and even expanding my knowledge. Then I began to wonder if I could do something to help others. I had time, though not so much money. When I found the Dementia Association of Helsinki, it was clear what I should do.”

Volunteers have an impact both at the individual and societal level, addressing prejudices related to memory disorders as well as supporting the well-being and coping of families affected by them. Every volunteer is extremely valuable to us, as the skills and presence each one brings add significant value to our clients and our activities.

Each volunteer contributes their own strengths and expertise to our work. Volunteer tasks are always tailored to meet the needs of both our activities and our volunteers, covering a wide range of areas.

Examples of volunteer tasks carried out:

  • Assisting and co-facilitating in the Day Care Center

  • Leading online exercise sessions

  • Leading Asahi and yoga groups

  • Assisting and/or leading brain exercise groups for people with memory disorders

  • Assisting and/or leading peer support groups for family members

  • Helping clients during outdoor activities, events, and excursions

  • Participating in advocacy work at fairs and events

  • Running social media campaigns

  • Serving as a member of the Memory Activists advocacy (Muistiaktiivit) group
